Public Art Update

Two projects commissioned by South Tipperary County Council and funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government under the percent for Art Scheme have recently been completed:

The Mines of Information

Artist Katy Goodhue devised a project focused on the extraordinary cultural heritage within her own locality – following on from a field trip organised by the Mines Heritage Trust which included a visit to a Mine in her own garden, she learned more about the Mines and mining community around her own home area and the many people whose lives were affected by the Mines and mining life.  As a result she developed an Art project which has involved the entire Slieveradagh community in the re-discovery and ownership of their place and their own cultural heritage. Primarily the project invovled 216 primary school children from the four schools of Ballingarry Parish, St Joseph’s N.S, Mohobar N.S, Lios-na-mBroc N.S and Slieveardagh N.S, but as the project developed it reached out to staff of the schools, the parents and grandparents and neighbours of the children. The children received workshops on the technical skills needed to operate small mini-dv video cameras. They in turn conducted short interviews with parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts and neighbours – anyone in fact who had had experience of mining life either from the experience of working in the Mines or those who lived in a mining family. These first hand video accounts formed the resource which started the school children on their exploration of the past. The video component of the project was co-ordinated by film-maker David Quinn. The video interviews were used as the basis of Art Workshops in the schools, and for the children to use as topics of study for their artwork and as such much of the artwork can be seen as a response to the information gathered. Throughout this multilayered process all participants gained from the experience, artists, children and the whole community. The project was made possible by funding from the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government and was commissioned by South Tipperary County Council. Mines of Information will be on exhibition at the County Museum until 9th July, part of the exhibition will also be on show at Ballingarry Community Hallfrom 2pm – 8pm on Friday 6th June and from 10am – 8pm on Sat 7th June.

CARE project

A group of participants from C.A.R.E., Clonmel, have been working on a visual art project with artist Ronnie Fitzgerald for some months now. Ronnie said “when we started it was about exploring and experimenting with materials.” Since the start of the project the group have been painting but also exploring other media including text and photography and sculpture.

Ronnie said “Ultimately exhibiting the work will make the public aware of the depth and diversity of the artistic expression of those who are often viewed as representative of their illness rather than unique individuals. Because of my own interaction with the group my  work as an artist has also been influenced greatly”.

Engaging in acts of creativity enables us to  be more aware of life as we are living it. I am very proud to be associated with this project

The project closes with an exhibition of work produced by the group and Ronnie in the South Tipperary Arts Centre  which opens on July 4th

This project was commissioned by South Tipperary County Council and funded by the Department of Environment, Heritage and Local Government under the percent for Art Scheme.  A number of other organisations including the South Tipperary Arts Centre,  and the South Tipperary VEC Community Education Section have also been involved.
