Dust in the air suspended

Dust in the air suspended is an exhibition of works from the collections of the Arts Council of Ireland and the Irish Museum of Modern Art, presented by South Tipperary County Council’s Arts Service at the South Tipperary County Museum. The exhibition brings together an exploration of both the physical and metaphysical understanding of suspension and the tensions that arise from the state of being suspended or in suspense. This collaborative project between the Arts Council, the Irish Museum of Modern Art’s National Programme and South Tipperary County Council’s Art Service, brings together for the first time in one exhibition, works from two national collections. Artists in the exhibition include; Dorothy Cross, Gary Coyle, Antony Gormley, Ilya Kabakov , Alice Maher, Fergus Martin, Austin McQuinn, Isabel Nolan, Jesús-Raphael Soto. The exhibition will be accompanied by a full colour catalogue and an education programme will form part of the programme.

Bealtaine

The Arts Services of South and North Tipperary County Council together with Tipperary Library Service run an annual festival Bealtaine, celebrating creativity in older age. Bealtaine is a National Programme run throughout May each year in association with Age and Opportunity. All over the country older persons groups are actively involved in arts events, workshops and activities.
The theme for the National Bealtaine Programme 2009 was taken from the poem The Door, by Miroslav Holub : ‘Go and open the door’ ‘ and is described by Age and Opportunity as an invitation ‘to try something new, to explore something creative this Bealtaine in recognition of the life enhancing joys of constant learning and our capacity for creativity at all stages of our lives.’

In the spirit of this we encouraged people to try new art forms, and to try something they may have never done before. Events ranged from poetry reading to music-making, from stone-carving to jewellery making and from film to visual arts and we hoped that by the end of the festival you might have had a chance to discover new skills and talents in the arts.

Altered Images

AlteredImages1  AlteredImages1  AlteredImages3

An exhibition of works from the collections of South Tipperary County Council Arts Service, Mayo County Council and the Irish Museum of Modern Art. Altered Images is a partnership initiative of South Tipperary Arts Service, Mayo County Council Arts Office and the Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA). The exhibition aims to introduce new ways of seeing and experiencing art for both disabled and non-disabled people. Accessible, interactive and inclusive in ethos, the exhibition aims to stimulate engagement with the visual arts for the general public and particularly for disabled people. The idea that a visual art exhibition should be accessible to all who choose to visit it is not a new one; most national museums and galleries have an access programme that enables people with disabilities to experience selected art works through various multi-sensory devices and through dedicated education and outreach programmes. However, the idea of collating an entire exhibition with an emphasis on accessibility in a multi-dimensional way is relatively new in Ireland . It is hoped that through this exhibition people will engage with the works on display to a higher degree, experiencing them with more intensity through the tactility of relief models, by listening to the audio and artists’ descriptions available and viewing a sign language interpretation by artist Amanda Coogan. This is a touring exhibition, which started the County Museum in Clonmel, County Tipperary, and then moved to Balli na Arts Centre in County Mayo and it will finally be on show at the  Irish Museum of Modern Art in Dublin, May 2010. An audio CD and Braille documentation of the print exhibition catalogue is ava ilable on request and Sign language tours are available by arrangement. An accessible websit can be found at www.alteredimages.ie .
