Bealtaine

The Arts Services of South and North Tipperary County Council together with Tipperary Library Service run an annual festival Bealtaine, celebrating creativity in older age. Bealtaine is a National Programme run throughout May each year in association with Age and Opportunity. All over the country older persons groups are actively involved in arts events, workshops and activities.
The theme for the National Bealtaine Programme 2009 was taken from the poem The Door, by Miroslav Holub : ‘Go and open the door’ ‘ and is described by Age and Opportunity as an invitation ‘to try something new, to explore something creative this Bealtaine in recognition of the life enhancing joys of constant learning and our capacity for creativity at all stages of our lives.’

In the spirit of this we encouraged people to try new art forms, and to try something they may have never done before. Events ranged from poetry reading to music-making, from stone-carving to jewellery making and from film to visual arts and we hoped that by the end of the festival you might have had a chance to discover new skills and talents in the arts.
