Connecting arts and youth - South Tipperary Youth Arts Programme

South Tipperary County Council Arts Service continues to develop its Youth Arts programme throughout South Tipperary in November this year with arts events for spanning all art forms for young people. The Arts Service is working in collaboration with cultural providers, schools and community to provide a wide range of arts activities aimed for young people between the ages of 13 to 20 years. 

Youth Impressions Exhibition

The South Tipperary Arts Centre will host an exhibition of prints of work created by young people from around the county. The exhibition will include images that were created by groups and individuals that took part in outreach projects with the Centre. The collection of prints will be made from photographs of Site specific work such as murals and sculptures and original art from Scoil Ruain in Killenaule, Glenview Community Centre in Carrick on Suir, CYTE, National School Ardfinnan, The Pry Project and the VEC in Clonmel.

These dynamic workshops are for teenagers interested in visual art making.  Participants will work together experimentally in a variety of media including painting and drawing.   This four-day programme of workshops throughout November is supported by the South Tipperary Arts Service and is facilitated by Miriam Robinson. As a practicing artist Miriam continuously exhibits her art; her latest solo exhibition was at Dublin ’s Hallward Gallery.  She is currently facilitating art workshops in South Tipperary hospitals and works as an arts educator and administrator.

‘Seen but not Heard, Feictear ach ná cloistear’. A century of Childhood in Ireland ‘South Tipperary County Museum’ in association with L.A.M.N. (Local Authority Museums Network) takes a visual look at the story of childhood in Ireland over the last one hundred years and how it has changed in terms of schooling, play, health & money in today’s modern society. Locals from South Tipperary have loaned a variety of memorabilia relating to their childhood, such as fisher price toys, porcelain dolls, board games, trains, teddy bears, a 19th century class room and old money to name but a few. This exhibition will bring you on a trip down memory lane, guaranteed to warm your heart.

J ewellery Design Workshop

This one day workshop with award winning tutor Celine Flynn, includes an introduction and general overview of beads and findings needed for jewellery making. The workshop will consider recycling jewellery into an original design and will provide an overview of what gems and findings go well together, complimenting colours, and what types of jewellery, suit individuals. It will provide you with a handmade necklace, bracelet and earrings that you personally design and create for any occasion. There will be a fee of €10 per person to cover the cost of the materials.

Junction is teaming up with the recently formed Breakstation group and the Pry Project, Clonmel to bring London-based street dance choreographer Leila McMillan back to Clonmel for an energy infused week-end of street dance; she will be teaching, coaching and mentoring young people in all forms of Hip Hop with a view to developing each participant’s own individual dance style. Leila was involved in Junction’s Breakstation Hip Hop café with Upswing earlier this summer and is back by popular demand. This is a perfect opportunity to sample some of her moves as well as getting some help with those steps that you’ve been practicing for ages.

Over 48 hours, a group of young people from South Tipperary will create, produce and perform a new play in just 2 days. This fun filled frantic 48 hours will be led by director Shane Dempsey and writer Hannah Burke. From nothing more than an empty space and eager participants the team will brain storm, devise, perform and finally present a brand new piece of writing to the public. Shane Dempsey and Hannah Burke recently collaborated on THE BAY, Edinburgh & London as well as SKOLKA which toured to Ireland, London, Edinburgh and Belgium in 2007.  The pair as well as running Stagecraft Clonmel run Fragments a theatre & film production hub based in London . A play in a day promises to be one of the highlights of The Connex programme 2009 and is open to all young people from 13 to 18 years. Photo credit John Crowley

South Tipperary County Council Arts Service in partnership with Cashel Arts Fest is hosting a five day workshop in dance leading up to a performance by the dance group on Sunday 22nd Nov. The group will work with dancers in residence Jazmin Chiodi and Alexandre Iseli to produce their own group dance piece and this will be performed alongside a work by Iseli-Chiodi Dance Company entitled →Me seeing You ←.  The workshops will propose warm-up exercises, games, experimentation around dance phrases and improvisation. Students will be encouraged to create dance work of their own and not only learn repeated dance phrases. Jazmin Chiodi ( Argentina ) and Alexandre Iseli ( Switzerland ) are the Dancers in residence with South Tipperary County Council and Tipperary Excel Arts Centre.  No prior dance experience necessary.

South Tipperary County Council Arts Services is working in conjunction with Yung Flix, South Tipperary Arts Centre and Tipperary Institute to host the performance of an experimental mixed media work by young film makers Elizabeth Cleary and Saoirse Millea, directed and produced by film maker Will Nugent. Elizabeth and Saoirse co-wrote 'Chasing Life' a mixed media piece for theatre incorporating live performance, film and soundscapes. The work looks at issues faced by teenagers including; relationships, peer pressure, bullying/abuse, alienation, self-harm and repression. Elizabeth who has made films with Yung Flix recently graduated from the Irish Film Academy and has since been working on theatre writing, acting and directing and has worked with both RTE and TG4. Saoirse Millea from Clonmel completed a multi media course in Waterford and is currently studying T.V. and Film Production at St. Johns Central College, Cork . Saoirse’s film, The cursed Teddy Bear was shortlisted for the Cork Youth Film Festival, she was also nominated for an award in International Film Festival Ireland 09, Tipperary . The film screening event will also feature works in progress from Yung Flix. Yung Flix is a South Tipperary Arts Centre programme that facilitates teenager filmmakers.

Liam Meagher has worked extensively in youth theatre in the south east region for the past twenty years. He has written over seventy plays and he specializes in the devising and writing of new plays with young people. Drumming Workshop

Jabba Jabba Jembe with Carrick on Suir - Neighbourhood Youth Project

Drumming workshops with David Day of Jabba Jabba Jembe will be held with the Carrick on Suir Neighbourhood Youth Project. The workshops will explore rhythms from Africa, the Middle East and around the world on a wide range of percussion instruments. Percussion Workshops allow people to learn and play rhythms in a fun, relaxed, non-competitive group environment while enjoying creative music making. The workshop will include use of rhythm games, improvisation, body percussion, call and answer (eg. stamping, clapping).
