Preserving the museum’s collection for the benefit of future generations is one of South Tipperary County Museum's main objectives

Conservation is a professional discipline dedicated to the preservation of cultural artefacts and natural specimens. A conservator carries out a variety of activities, which generally fall under one of four categories: active, preventive, research & education

  • Active conservation involves interventive activities such as cleaning, stabilising, and restoring objects or specimens.
  • Preventive conservation describes passive activities such as controlling the Museum environment (e.g. light, humidity), preventing insect pests from entering the Museum, and ensuring that objects are correctly packed and handled.
  • Research describes technical activities which support active and preventive conservation. Using a wide range of analytical tools, the technical aspects of artworks and artefacts are explored so that the conservator can undertake appropriate treatments.
  • Education ensures that the importance of the conservation technique and process is appreciated by our visitors.
Although mostly behind-the-scenes, the conservators' work is accessible through talks, workshops and occasional tours of the laboratory. Advice is available to the public at all times in response to enquiries by letter, telephone, e-mail, and in person by appointment.
