Earthen Banks and Broken Walls - 13th December 2007

Archaeological Discoveries

Venue:
South Tipperary Co Musuem, Clonmel
Earthern Banks and Broken Walls Winter 2007
Further Info:

The exhibition details the unique number of outstanding ancient monuments that survive from past ages in the Irish Countryside. These range from megalithic tombs to earthen ringforts, of early medieval date, to castles, churches and other buildings. They are a wonderful link to the past and are to be found in almost every townland in the country.
They are important features in the cultural landscape and when a monument is destroyed part of our history and identity is destroyed with it.   This valuable legacy from the past is something we should all strive to understand, cherish and protect.  The emphasis in this exhibition is on monuments likely to be found on farmland and in private ownership around the country rather than on National Monuments in state care.
Collaboration: The exhibition will showcase a number of artefacts from the National Museum of Ireland (Cashel N8 – Michelstown By Pass material) and pieces from South Tipperary Museum’s Collection.
Course led work: Students from the Senior College Portfolio and Craft courses will be presenting models of tombs and ringforts. A beautifully lit display of batiks will be themed around the exhibition ‘Earthen Banks and Broken Walls’.
Seminar: South Tipperary County Museum in association with  ‘Earthen Banks and Broken Walls ‘ will host a one-day seminar on current, recent and ongoing Archaeological projects in South Tipperary.  The Seminar will be held on Saturday 19th January 2008 in the Clonmel Park Hotel, the Poppyfields, Clonmel.  All are welcome and admission is free. Contact Julia @ 052 34562 / julia.walsh@southtippcoco.ie  for further information.

A free brochure will accompany this exhibition and is suitable for all ages, school, community and historical groups

Further Info:

Lady Clementina Hawarden (1822-65) was an amateur photographer who lived and made photographs in London in the mid 19th century. S he was Scottish-born and enjoyed her visits to the well-known Dundrum Estate. Her affinity with local people developed largely out of her empathy with their suffering in Famine times. She has earned a special place in the history of the community. It makes this collection all the more meaningful and welcome for Tipperary people.

Hawarden was respected among the photographic circles of her time, and her work has stood up to the scrutiny of history and is still influential today. Exploring femininity and family relationships, identity and form, Hawarden's photographs are appreciated for their quality, composition and themes. They also function separately as art photographs or studies of mood.

South Tipperary County Museum worked in partnership with Tipperary Excel to bring this collection back to the locality. Courtesy of the Victoria and Albert Museum, more communities will have the opportunity to view this breath taking collection as it tours the region. It will be showing next in Thurles Library 17th – 27th Nov 2008.

Antarctica Beyond Endurance: Journey to the Bottom of the Earth

From 21st November 2003- 21st February 2004 In the early 20th century Antarctica became the focus of exploration and discovery. Many countries vied to be the first to unlock the secrets of this remote continent and to plant a flag at the South Pole.

Venue:
South Tipperary Co Musuem, Clonmel
Antarctica
Further Info:
The exhibition at South Tipperary County Museum concentrated on three of the most famous expeditions: Discovery, Terra Nova and Endurance. Each of these expeditions has its own story but the characters that took part in them inextricably link them. The Kerryman, Tom Crean, provides the link in the exhibition as he served on all three expeditions.
Starting out as a volunteer seaman on Discovery, Crean was drawn again and again to Antarctica, and his experiences there were to have a major influence on his life. For early explorers like Crean, Antarctica was isolated and alone at the bottom of the world, presenting the ultimate challenge to survive and endure.
