The County Archive
The Local Government Act, 1994, section 65 placed an obligation on Local Authorities making them responsible for their archives and records. South Tipperary County Council is currently in the process of establishing an archives service. An archivist is working on their archives and records, so that they can be made available to the public. While no public service is available at the moment enquiries can be made to the archivist.
What are archives?
Archives are records of long -term value. They are primary sources of evidence and a valuable resource for documenting and explaining the history and identity of a society.
Archival material includes, maps, plans, drawings, papers, correspondence, files, photographs, ledgers, films, microfilms and other micrographic records, sound recordings, pictorial records, magnetic tapes, magnetic discs, optical discs, video discs, any machine readable records.
Acquisitions:
As well as providing for the archives of the local authority, the archives service is also interested in all material relating to South Tipperary. The aim is to develop a service that documents all aspects of life in South Tipperary for researchers now and for generations to come.
Anybody wishing to donate material can do so by contacting the archivist. Call: 052 6134565 or email archives@southtippcoco.ie
