Health & Safety
In accordance with Section 13 of the 1989 Act, the employees at a place of work may select and appoint one of their number to act as a Safety Representative.
To this end a Ballot was held among employees of South Tipperary County Council to elect one Safety Representative and one Deputy Safety representative for each Engineering Area of the County, who will represent all employees in that area. It is intended that the period of office will generally be for a period of 3 years.
As a result of the Ballot the following Safety Representatives and Deputy Safety Representatives were elected.

A Safety Representative may consult with and make representations to the employer on Safety Health and Welfare matters relating to the employees in the place of work.
The rights of the Safety Representative include:
- Access to information particularly from the Safety Statement.
- To be informed by the employer of a visit by the H.S.A. Inspectorate.
- To make representations to the Council.
- To investigate accidents and dangerous occurrences provided it does not interfere with the performance of any statutory function.
- To make representations to and receive advice from the H.S.A. Inspectorate.
- To carry out inspections and investigate hazards and complaints subject the agreement of the employer.
- To accompany an Inspector on any tour of inspection accept when this is for accident investigation.
- Time off as may be reasonable to act as Safety Representative or to acquire the knowledge to carry out that function.
The Council will facilitate the Safety Representative in carrying out the function as defined in the Act, as outlined above and as may be agreed from time to time.
All elected Safety Representatives and their deputies have attended a five day training course organised by N.I.S.O. Further refresher courses will be provided.
