Wastenot, Wantnot

Dr. Martin Mansergh, Minster of State at the Department of Finance with special responsibility for the Office of Public Works and the Arts, formally launched the newly redeveloped website www.wastenot.ie on Saturday 12th September at the Iverk Agricultural Show, Piltown, Co. Kilkenny on behalf of the South East Region Local Authorities of South Tipperary, Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford, Waterford City and Wexford.

This web site has been developed as a key tool in raising the awareness of the South East Region Waste Management Plan 2006 - 2010.

Effective public awareness is intrinsically important in the delivery of the Regional Waste Plan. It is through effective and constant awareness raising that waste management behavior can be guided and changed leading to a decrease in waste produced, increased recycling rates and better public awareness of the waste problem facing the region and Country as a whole. It is extremely important that the public are educated about the challenges facing the region in terms of waste management so that they can be empowered to take positive action in dealing with their own waste.

Public awareness in the South East is delivered through many different mediums including the constant use of local press and radio. In this information age it is impossible to ignore the importance of communicating through the use of technology and the internet. With the redevelopment of www.wastenot.ie the region now has an excellent interactive website that will enhance public awareness programmes and appeal to a wide range of groups including businesses and educational establishments. Schools will find the site particularly useful as a one stop shop for information about our regional waste management plan.

Speaking at the launch Cllr Liam Ahearn, Cathaoirleach of South Tipperary County Council on behalf of the six local authorities in the region, formally thanked the six Environmental / Public Awareness Officers who have worked so hard to deliver the newly redeveloped website.‘The work of our Awareness Officers is fundamental to the success of the Regional Waste Management Plan as they are our main point of contact with schools, businesses, community groups and the general public and they are responsible for the promotion of positive environmental behavior across the region. Furthermore I would particularly like to thank Ms. Ruth Maher and Ms. Marion Power, IT Section, South Tipperary County Council whose creativity and vision has resulted in the new more accessible layout and attractive appearance of the website.’

After a number of months of redevelopment, information gathering andtechnical updates, the www.wastenot.ie website is now fully operational allowing access to all citizens of the region and beyond to a range of information including:

  • Details of the South East Region Waste Management Plan 2006 -2011
  • Details of new regulations and legislation in place Information on Green Schools programs for pupils and teachers alike
  • Links to other sites containing games and fun-stuff for kids
  • Links to the web pages of other Environmental Organisations of interest
  • And much more
