Horse Control
The Control of Horses Act, which became law in 1997 provides for the control of wandering/stray horses. Under the Act this Council made by-laws in February 1999 in relation to the control of horses. These by-laws make provision for the seizure , detention and disposal of stray and wandering horses. When the by-laws were adopted by the Members, the Council entered into a contract with a private operator from Cork (ACS) for the seizure and detention of stray horses. While most of the horses were claimed back, the owners did have to pay the full cost of seizure, transport, detention and veterinary fees and also had to satisfy the Council that they had proper facilities for the horses. Horses are microchipped before release to facilitate identification in the event of future seizure.
