Environmental Policy
South Tipperary County Council plays a vital role in providing key services to a population of 83,221. We are committed to the prevention of pollution and to managing and continually improving our environmental performance by implementing the certified Environmental Management Systems, ISO 14001 and EMAS. These systems provide a framework to evaluate, improve and report our environmental impacts in relation to our Environment and Physical Planning & Development Sections.
The Council continually aims to improve its environmental performance by:
- Formulating and implementing strategies and policies in a sustainable manner, i.e. linking the economic, social and environmental objectives of society in a balanced way
- Protecting and maintaining water quality
- Striving to achieve a litter-free county
- Managing the recovery, recycling and disposal of waste arising so as to promote waste prevention and minimisation wherever practicable
- Ensuring responsible and sustainable management of in-house waste
- Complying with all relevant environmental legislation
- Reporting on our regulatory functions, to appropriate bodies, as required
- Encouraging a high standard of environmental performance from ourselves, our suppliers and contractors
- Practising environmentally friendly purchasing and encouraging the sustainable use of materials
- Adopting energy and water saving measures to encourage the sustainable use of utilities
- Making information and advice on care for the environment readily available to the general public
- Ensuring that the environmental policy is communicated to all employees, suppliers and relevant contractors
- Educating, training and motivating staff to conduct their activities in an environmentally responsible manner
