The term "national monument" as defined in Section 2 of the National Monuments Act (1930) means a monument "the preservation of which is a matter of national importance by reason of the historical, architectural, traditional, artistic or archaeological interest attaching thereto". It is the policy of the Council to safeguard sites, features and objects of archaeological interest generally and will protect (in-situ where practicable or as minimum, preservation by record) all monuments included in the Record of Monuments and Places and sites, features and objects of archaeological and historical interest generally.
Location details of Sites and Monuments by area can be reviewed under Volume Three of the County Development Plan or under the mapping element of the relevant Town Development Plan.
